Standalone:

A Standalone DVR simply means it is a DVR that operates without the visibility of an operating system. The DVR looks and acts like a VCR without the tape. It is usually very stable but more difficult to use than the PC type. Getting around requires many buttons to be pressed and sometimes extensive searches for past video. Instead of looking at a calendar and a clock to search for events of the past, you now have to scroll down a long list of events. Unless you know the precise date and time of an incident, getting there may take more time.

PC Based:

PC Based DVRs offer you great benefits for the money. There are several levels of PC based DVRs but all of the DVRs we sell are tested and offer great quality as well as reliability. PCs are PCs however and you can expect that over time that some parts will need to be replaced.
